The Royal Liverpool Hospital. Academic Palliative Care Unit
Interior strategy
Commission to assist with the re design of the APCU and deliver a new standard for patient experience. To pioneer the use of art & design in restoring health and spirit and create a welcoming environment for families and carers. The ward was opened in 2016 by Sir Mike Richards Chief Inspector of Hospitals. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive with a noticeable impact on recovery times.
Wayfinding
Commission to work with the Trust to review and recommend a colour scheme palette for each of the hospital floors to provide an appealing and clear plan for visitors and staff alike to navigate round the new hospital. The Wayfinder had to take into consideration many criteria such as patients with dementia, wheelchair access and impaired visibility.
Atrium Way finding:
In order to distinguish between the two sets of lifts in the main atrium space, the main public lifts will have the level way finding colour surrounding the entire elevator façade. This will draw more attention to the main set of lifts encouraging visitors to use them.
The other set of lifts, going to the haematology and critical care, will be a neutral grey tone and have a splash colour to coordinate with its corresponding way finding colour.
Level Way finding:
With a hospital as large as The Royal Liverpool University Hospital, it is important to differentiate between each level with a different colour. When the colours are used in collaboration with symbols and simple text, a multi layered Way finding Strategy forms which enables users to orientate themselves by a variety of different ways. The visitor will be able to find where they are going by using, Unit name, Level number, and Level Colour.
This diagram shows how the Hospital colours will coordinate with CSSB. Both of the primary, patient lifts cores will have a different theme and graphic design, created by an artist which will differentiate them from specific level colours.
The Way finding colours form the basis of the Interior Design colour palette.
